I've easily got the tires to handle the snowfall, but sadly, I don't have super vision. Looks like I'm taking a snow day and having myself a 3-day weekend.

Is the "snow day" an accepted excuse being away from work there?

No, but calling my boss and telling him; "I'm using a PTO day because the visibility is non-existent" is.

I would try it, but no one would believe me with the whole living in Florida thing.

Also, at this point there is a travel advisory and the bad weather is widespread. At my place of work everyone got a phone call saying "Work from home if you can. If you must come into the office, do so with extreme caution."

Buffalonians arent "scurrd", but sometimes we want an excuse to stay out of the cold.

Ok. Sounds reasonable. We usually drag ourselves to work depending on the weather.

Our winter is getting really lame again. South Finland got some snow during the holidays but then it rained for couple of days and now only some remains can be seen. Yesterday my bicycle route was totally covered by slippery ice and it was surprising that I crash landed only twice.

Lame winter sucks. Give me either winter or summer. Not his crappy water, darkness and wet ice.

If it snows enough at work, I get a paid snow day. It literally feels like high school when that happens lol. Hence, I say bring on the snow!

Yeah here in Buffalo the snow is most often actually snowy and produces some sort of traction. So we're not usually too worried about driving through it, even for the most frivolous of reasons. But in November we had a major storm (2 different storm systems) at 7-ish feet in less than 72 hours, that resulted in a huge clean up effort that was hampered by tons of stranded motorists. So now the Transportation Authority is being a little more cautious with the subsequent storms we've been receiving.

Sometimes it does snow in the summer yes.

Is there any requirements for the (winter) tires during the cold months?

No requirements. If I had to make an estimate from my own observations, I'd say about 50% of people put snow tires on, a smaller portion make sure their all seasons are up to snuff, and a minor portion don't care/can't afford new tires.

You can use studded tires out here, but you can't use chains. Fortunately you shouldn't need chains out here unless you leave off of a dirt road or the like.

Sound scary. Even old (and hardened) winter tires tend to be really slippery when there is snow or ice. And summer tires resemble more skis than tires with their traction performance.

The winter tires are mandatory here during December, January and February in light vehicles. Heavy trucks and buses can use the same year around. The studded tires are optional. Around half of our light vehicles have studs.

The chains could be used if they would be needed but usually only farm tractors and some weird vehicles use them.
